Brooktoneddy Opportunity Zone

BOZ

is a venue with a mission.

The concept began as an after school program for high school students and has evolved into something else.

Richard has a few foundational goals for this place, all of which manifest things that he loves – the natural world, history, music, art, engineering, education and business. These themes are woven across the various projects we are working on and the events we host.

Early on

When I bought this place in October 2021, I did not have any vision for what Brooktoneddy would become. There were over 100 people here for the auction and the real estate was sold first. The rest of the auction took care of the prior owner’s wood shop and other stuff, creating a fresh canvas for me to reimagine this place. For the first year, I lived a mile down stream in downtown Brooktondale – where I learned that it is called 6 mile creek because that is the distance from Brookton to Ithaca

I have been having a blast peeling back layers of wallpaper and lineloum in the pre civil war house and creating a performance space upstairs in the barn, but the most fun part has been restoring the old mill.

In photos the mill is called Annis because that is who operated it from 1899 to its closure during the Great Depression. I call it Breckinridge mill in homage to Juanita Breckinridge, who lived here with her industrious husband – he owned other properties and she was the first pastor at the new Brookton church, which still stands today; in fact, she was the first female ordained minister with a congregation in America and she later became a leader in the Suffragette movement.

Current

Today Brooktoneddy is an event space with a unique vibe

We are happy to host any event, but prefer things that revolve around history, music, education or appreciating the natural world.
